The New iPhone Only App Honk Tops Charts Within Days Of Its Release

All those Terribly Tiny Tales quotes on backspace or Tumblr quotes on thinking out loud can now take the back seat as Honk is here to the rescue. With this app, you will be literally thinking out loud with no escape whatsoever, which applies to both you and your recipient.

Honk is an instant messaging app that has launched recently after several months of testing. With this app, whatever you type in that little box will be displayed and visible on the screen to both parties.

Meaning, every backspace, every pause, every delete, and every letter you type will be viewable by your recipient in real-time. The app doesn’t have a send button as there’s no need for one.

However, it does have a character limit of up to 160 characters and not more. This is quite similar to how Google Docs works – the concept of real-time collaboration. Essentially, you and the people viewing the doc can edit a doc together, allowing you to view everything they type, delete, re-type, and so on.

Basically, it’s like sitting right next to them and watching them type, which makes collaborating much smoother. Honk is quite similar to it and has an added feature of message disappearing that was initially introduced by Snapchat and eventually adopted by Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and so on.

Moreover, Honk does not have any features of saving the chat history or so, which makes it all the more intriguing. People would resort to Snapchat for private texting or conversations of confidentiality, as Snapchat had the added advantage of being notified if the other person is saving the chat, screenshotting, or screen recording it.

But with the launch of Honk, it’s quite possible that it might replace Snapchat in the messaging aspect. As for its name, Honk literally has a ‘honk’ button that lets you catch the recipient’s attention.

All you have to do is honk and the recipient’s phone will be flooded with a ton of notifications if they aren’t online, or with emojis otherwise. The only drawback of this app is that it is an iPhone only app.

Meaning, its commercialization might not reap many profits in India where most of the people are android users instead. There might be possibilities of them releasing the app for android as well, but let’s save that for another day.

There are a ton of cute customization features offered by Honk as well, such as allowing you to change the chat bubble’s color or the theme color, much like what Instagram DMs have recently incorporated.

It also has a special feature of “Magic Words”, one that lets you designate a specific emoji to a word and makes it float every time you type that word. Every emoji also has a “Reaction”, which shows up a series of animations just like iMessages.

You can even select your emoji skin tone which will then be reflected across all emojis you use on Honk. Saves you the effort of choosing a skin tone every time you use a new emoji! The only drawback of this app is that it still hasn’t implemented the dark mode.

However, it has soared up to a #11 in the US and a #15 in Canada, making it an instant hit. It is yet to see what more customizations and optimizations the app is to bring in the near future.
