Wounded amazon abandoned by comrades

GOVERNMENT troopers rescued a wounded pregnant amazon who was abandoned by her comrades during an encounter in the forested area of Impasugong, Bukidnon around 2 p.m. Saturday.

Capt. Norman Tagros, the civil-military operations (CMO) officer of the 403rd Infantry Brigade, identified the slightly wounded NPA guerilla as Susan Cabusao Guaynon, 22 years old.

Tagros said the five-month pregnant Guaynon was abandoned by her comrades, around 40 of them, during a 20-minute firefight in Sitio Ulayanon, Barangay Kalabugao, Impasugong.

She sustained a wound on her forehead.

Guaynon is now in stable condition.

Tagros said government troopers immediately applied first aid right after they found the wounded amazon.

She was then rushed to the nearest hospital for medical treatment.

“We will see to it that she receives the medical treatment needed,” said Lt. Col. Ronald Illana, the commanding officer of 8th Infantry Battalion.

Illana said they are communicating with the family of the amazon.

The army officer said the medical attention they gave to Guaynon showed that “the government respects Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law.”

Brigadier General Eric Vinoya, 403rd Infantry Brigade commander, said “it is shameful that the NPA… keeps on recruiting members with sweet and promising words, yet they fail to look into the welfare of their own members – leaving a wounded and pregnant woman in the mountains after the clash with 8IB troops.”

“They should be the one looking after her especially that she is pregnant and she needs monthly check-ups,” Vinoya said.

Guaynon’s group is said to be behind the killing of Impasugong Mayor Mario Okinlay on July 2, 2014 in Barangay Bontongon, and the murder of three unarmed 8IB soldiers on Feb. 1, 2017 in Sitio Kaleb, Barangay Kibalabag, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon.

The Feb. 1 incident prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to terminate the government’s unilateral ceasefire declaration with the communist groups.

Recovered at the encounter site were two AK47 rifles, one AR18 rifle, one caliber 30 M1 carbine rifle, one M4 rifle, an air gun; and 30 backpacks filled with subversive documents and personal belongings.
