Villar to propose bill for dev’t of livestock, poultry industries

SENATOR Cynthia Villar has vowed to pass a law that will ensure a bigger budget for livestock, poultry and dairy industries in the agricultural sector.

In the second day of the 19th Davao Agri Trarde Expo (DATE) on September 22 at SM Lanang Premiere, Villar said she will file a proposal in the Senate that will ensure the development of the livestock, poultry and dairy sub-sectors.

“In that (proposed) law, we will make sure to provide substantial budget for livestock, poultry, and dairy,” said Villar, adding that it is unfair for example, the livestock industry to get a measly budget when it is the source of a third of the output in the agricultural sector. She, however, did not qualify her statement, particularly on the value of the contribution of livestock industry to the sector.

She said that the budget for a certain sector must be commensurate to its contribution to the economy.

During the budget hearing of the Department of Agriculture, Villar, Senate committee on agriculture and food chair, said she called on Secretary Emmanuel Pinol to come up with a better budget proposal for the livestock sector which resulted in the P5 billion budget, up from P2.7 billion.

She said she will find ways to ensure that the allocation intended for the sub-sectors will be equitable in relation to the entire budget of the sector.

She added that the public must “remember that the agriculture sector is not only about rice and vegetables. Kailangan kasama din ang livestock, poultry, and dairy.”

Engr. Wilfred Teves, DATE 2017 chair, earlier urged the government to look into the plight of the livestock and poultry sub-sectors and help them grow.

Teves, also the vice president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that there is a need for government to help the sub-sector map their development to ensure that they provide better contribution to the economy.

“We are facing many challenges so we need the help of everybody,” said Teves, adding that among these challenges is sourcing funds for the expansion of livestock and poultry raisers. With CQF
