UM lauds accomplishments of Miss U PHL MJ Lastimosa

THE UNIVERSITY of Mindanao joins the rest of the country in celebrating the accomplishments of its Miss Universe 2014 bet Mary Jean Lastimosa, an alumna of the school and proud Umian.

While she did not bring home the top crown, the school is proud in recognizing the achievements of Lastimosa on the worldwide platform of the Miss Universe pageants; displaying the intelligence, grace, and beauty of a Filipina and especially one from Mindanao.

MJ clinched a spot in the Top 10 and was a strong bet who was fondly regarded by her fellow contestants, and displayed the same congeniality despite not being included in the Top 5, the first time in five years the Philippines was not included in the final roster.

“I was just grateful to be given the opportunity to represent the country and I hope I did well, that I really showed what a true Filipina is. Kaya ngayon, wala akong bitterness, wala akong regrets, (Even now, I have no bitterness, I have no regrets,)” she is quoted in an interview on the Inquirer website.

The BS in Computer Engineering graduate also opted to downplay the controversy surrounding her dress during the national costume display round, wherein netizens said the garb chosen by Binibining Pilipinas Charities head Stella Araneta lowered the chances of Lastimosa getting chosen by judges.

Joining the international pageant was a dream that came true for the 27-year-old MJ, who is a pageant regular in the country and even in school, was crowned the 2006 Mutya ng UM.

Her other major titles include Miss Regional PRISAA 2007, Mutya ng Dabaw 2008, Reyna ng Aliwan 2008, and the Miss Universe Philippines 2014.

Lastimosa joined 87 of the most beautiful women from all over the world in the Jan. 26 coronation night in Doral City, Florida, with Miss Colombia Paulina Vega crowned the 2014 Miss Universe.
