UM faces. St. John Paul in DCCL opener

THE NEWLY-BORN Davao City Collegiate League (DCCL) 2014 gets underway this Saturday morning with host University of Mindanao squaring off with St. John Paul College of Davao (SJPCD) at the UM Matina campus gym.The UM-SJPCD men’s basketball encounter in Bracket B is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. and right after a brief but elaborate opening ceremony to be attended by all the participating 12 teams.

The men’s basketball event attracted 11 teams while the women’s side had seven squads. Meanwhile, a total of eight teams each are playing in the men and women’s volleyball.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte had been invited to grace the opening ceremony. The day’s activity will start with a parade of teams passing through the city’s main streets.

Davao Archbishop, Most Rev. Romulo G. Valles, will lead the invocation during the opening of the new league organized by ABS-CBN Davao and the City Government of Davao thru the Sports Development Division-City Mayor’s Office (SDD-CMO).

Also playing on opening day for basketball are the UM women’s squad, which will go up against the Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU). The Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) men’s and women’s squads, meanwhile, will face the Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC).

The volleyball games will also commence this Saturday with UM meeting the Davao Merchant Marine Academy (DMMA) in men’s action and HCDC clashing with the University of the Philippines-Mindanao in the women’s side. (SDD-CMO)
