Two high-powered rifles found at encounter site

TROOPS of the 58th Infantry Battalion recovered high-powered firearms following the armed encounter with the New People’s Army in the outskirts of Sitio Kapatagan, Barangay Umagos, Lagonglong, Misamis Oriental on Wednesday, Dec. 6, around 11:10 a.m.

They found an M16 rifle and an M1 Garand rifle while scouring the encounter site.

Capt. Norman Tagros, the Civil-Military Operations (CMO) officer of the 403rd Infantry Brigade, said the soldiers were on a pursuit operation on the rebels who attacked the municipal police station in the neighboring town of Binuangan on Sunday, Dec. 3.

He said the encounter was also the result of the 58th Infantry Battalion’s prompt response to the continued reports from concerned local residents who tipped the army of the rebels’ escape route.

Earlier, Brig. General Eric Vinoya, commander of the 403rd Infantry Brigade, ordered the 58th Infantry Battalion to conduct relentless offensives against the NPAs.

“Most importantly, I would like to thank our people, the local residents of Binuangan and its neighboring communities, for continuously reporting the presence of NPA terrorists in their area,” Vinoya said.

“This is a very critical requirement in our conduct of focused military operations in order to secure our communities from the exploitation and deception of the NPA,” he added.
