Two Davaoenos pass Voice blind auditions

TWO DAVAOENOS passed the blind auditions of ABS-CBN’s “The Voice of the Philippines.”

Manila-based singer/theater actor Poppert Bernadas, 27, gets four-chair turn, while 18-year-old Shaira Rica Opsimar impressed her idol, Sarah Geronimo.

They are now both part of Sarah’s team.

Bernadas is a member of The Ryan Cayabyab Singers who is set to perform at SM City Davao on Friday afternoon.

Bernadas has been performing in various theater productions, including the hit musical “Rak of Aegis”

He joined the competition to fulfill his mother’s wish of seeing him join a TV singing contest. His mother is currently undergoing dialysis treatments.

For his performance on the show’s episode on Sunday, Bernadas showed off his vocal chops and sang Aegis’ “Luha.” He wowed all four coaches, who all turned for him.

Upon turning, Lea Salonga immediately recognized Bernadas.

“Ikaw ba ‘yan? Poppert, ikaw ba ‘yan?” Salonga exclaimed, enumerating some of the plays Bernadas was part of.

Salonga then called on Lyca Gairanod, who won “The Voice Kids,” to sing with Bernadas.

“Ang magaling sa ‘yo, marunong kang magkwento eh. Doing musicals taught you that, na hindi lang ‘yung ganda ng boses, ‘yung vocal skill mo naman naririnig namin eh. Kanina, after all of us turned, you were just, free for all ka na lang. You know how to tell a story. If you end up choosing me, then that’s like the universe’s way of saying, here’s the opportunity for you to pay it forward,” Salonga added.

“Nagsisisi ako na noong una pa lang beses na gusto kong pumindot, hindi ko nagawa, kaya nagkasabay kami ni Coach Lea. Pero ang ganda lang ng boses mo, kung paano ka magkwento sa kantang ‘yun, na hindi mo na kinailangang tumaas nang sobra-sobra. You didn’t have to hit that ceiling right there. Sana bigyan mo ako ng chance, Poppert, na kahit papaano, kung pagtitiwalaan mo ako na i-guide ka rin, kahit ang dami mo nang alam. Sana, bigyan mo ako ng chance na makatrabaho ka as your coach,” Geronimo told Bernadas, convincing him to choose her team.

“Ako, to be honest, the reason why I turned for you, you can sing, you can truly sing. If you come to my team, it’s a very diverse team, we would happily have you,” Bamboo said.

“Napakasarap pakinggan ng damdamin ng boses mo. It just, I felt it in my bones, my soul, my heart. But if you want something fresh and new, something, you know, different, then you come to my team, ’cause I’ll give you that,” said.

Bernadas eventually chose Geronimo to be his coach. “Ang coach na pipiliin ko po ay alam kong matutulungan ako sa industriyang ito. So ang coach ko po ay si Sarah,” he explained.

Also joining Sarah’s team on Sunday is the Davaoena Shaira.

Shaira got Sarah’s approval after her “flawless” performance of Jessie J’s “Mama Knows Best”.

“Naririnig talaga namin ‘yung vocal acrobatics mo. Ang taas, taas, taas talaga ng mga nararatring mong mga nota,” Salonga said.

But for Geronimo, another quality that impressed her was Opsimar’s confidence onstage.

“Nagusuthan kung paano ka gumalaw stage, parang wala kang kakabakaba,” she said.

According to Opsimar, she wanted to win “The Voice” to help her cancer-stricken friends, saying that a very close cousin succumbed to the disease.

Sarah now has 10 members in her team. They others are Carol Leus, Daniel Ombao, Demie Fresco, Jason Dy, Kokoi Baldo, Mark Dagal, Monique Lualhati, and Vanessa Monot.

By the end of the episode, Team Apl has nine members: Jason Fernandez, Alisah Bonaobra, Bradley Holmes, Ferns Tosco, Jannet Cadayona, Kristina Ng, Mark Avila, Mark Cando, Mecerdita Quiachon and Samantha Felizco.

Team Lea also has ten members: Charles Catbagan, Christelle Tiquis, Nino Alejandro, Humfrey Nicasio, Jem Cubil, Leah Patricio, Miro Valera, Philippe Go, Thara Jordana, and Timothy Pavino.
