Three more golds for swimmer Elises; DC softball complete 3-peat

KORONADAL CITY – Davao City’s bemedalled tanker John Paul Elises splashed his way to three more gold medals as the girls’ softball team continued its dominance by winning the gold on Wednesday in day 4 of the 2015 Batang Pinoy Mindanao Qualifying Leg in this South Cotabato province capital.

Elises, 12, racked up a total of seven gold medals at the close of the two-day swimming competition after topping the 12-Under 100m butterfly and 200m individual medley in the final day.

The Ateneo de Davao student-athlete, who won four gold medals in the opener, later joined forces with Dave Jones Andevor, Edward Alfaro III and Matthiew Adrien Tao to clinch the gold in the 4x50m freestyle relay.

Elises feat made him the winningest athlete for Davao City which hauled 15 gold, 19 silver and 18 bronze medals as of 5pm Wednesday.

Davao City girls’ softball team pulled off an improbable fightback to edge Balingasag, Misamis Oriental, 11 – 10, to win the gold and complete a rare three peat at the Koronadal National High School field.

Trailing 7 – 10, the wards of Nelly Torres and Maria Visitacion Narval scored four crucial runs in the seventh and final inning and Irene Lumanas wiped out Balingasag’s batters to pull away with the win for Davao City which won the gold in Tagum in 2013 and Pagadian last year.

The chess team finally handed its share in the gold medal production of Davao City courtesy of Earl Rhay Mantilla and Honey Grace Buenafe.

Mantilla and Buenafe, who were eluded by the gold in the blitz competition, made a huge comeback to win the boys and girls chess standard competition respectively at the Gaisano Grand Citimall Koronadal activity area.

Sisters Lorraine and Irish Yngayo copped the silver and bronze respectively in the girls’ category to complete a 1-2-3 finish for Davao City.

Davao City arnis team pocketed a handful of silver medals as taekwondo bagged one that came from Jan Elyzze Delos Reyes who lost in the gold medal match to Rey Tambulan of Tagum City in the cadet boys lightweight category.

Arnis bets John Lloyd Canon and June Floyd Zabala settled for silver in the boys full contact flyweight and lightweight class respectively. Daphne Bactong got the silver in the girls’ full contact pinweight category.

Davao City boys volleyball team is gunning for the gold as well as boxers John Ednoel Prevendido and Efrelan Lorito as of this writing.

Prevendido defeated Rovemil Son Dakila of Gen. Santos City via split decision to arrange a gold medal match with Dan Ariel Adolfo of Team Pacman in the school boys light-pin weight category.

Lorito, however, had a different route of entering the gold medal match in the school boys light-flyweight category as he walked his way over via disqualification of South Cotabato bet.

He is up against another Team Pacman bet Kim Delmar Macaanga in the gold medal match.
