Thousands of DCHNS students participate in earthquake drill

THOUSANDS OF Davao City National High School students scampered to safe grounds as the Office of the National Defense (OCD) XI launched the third quarter nationwide simultaneous earthquake drill around 2 p.m. Yesterday.

Leoncio Cirunay, OCD XI director, estimated the number of student participants at around 12,000.

Among the agencies that participated in the drill were Social Security System, Bureau of Fire and Protection XI, Police Regional office XI, Maritime Industry Authority, Department of Science and Technology, Task Force Davao, Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao, Eastern Mindanao Command, and Department of Public works and highways.

He said they need to teach students and teachers the safe way to do in times of emergency, particularly the duck, cover and hold technique. Evaluators were also deployed to gauge reaction time, technique and areas that need to be improved in the future.

“We will observe how the City High will do it so that we can advise to them what are the proper things to do and the facilities they will go,” he said. “Then we will execute to them the proper duck, cover and hold after the earthquake drill they the students and teachers will go to the safe site.”

The earthquake drill was also conducted in the five provinces of the region. There are around 30,000 students and staff of the school participated in the activity.
