Task force seizes P40-K worth of illegal lumber in Surigao Sur

SOLDIERS of the 36th Infantry battalion and Cantilan Municipal Police Station confiscated illegal lumber worth almost P40,000 in an operation conducted on a furniture shop and other sawmills in Cantilan, Surigao del Sur on Friday evening.Capt.  Francisco Garello Jr.,  the civil-military operations officer of the 36th IB, said  around 10:45 p.m. on April 20, the joint anti-illegal logging operation was launched by elements of Charlie Company of 36th Infantry Battalion, team from Cantilan MPS and personnel from DENR-Caraga on the furniture shop and sawmills located at Cantilan.

The operation resulted in the confiscation of 1,239.67 board feet of lauan lumber and 62 pieces of sudiang lumber with an estimated volume of 471.90 board feet with a total market value worth P38,257.80. They also seized one circular saw and 22 pieces saw accessories.

The seized and confiscated equipment, machines and wood products are brought to Cenro-Cantilan for proper disposition.

Meanwhile, troops of the Charlie Company coordinated with Cenro-Cantilan for the filling of the appropriate charge against the violators.

Since January 2018, eight successful anti-illegal logging operations were conducted by the 36th IB in coordination with the DENR and PNP in the province of Surigao del Sur. The total seized contraband reached 47,254.57 board feet with an estimated market value worth P1,118.257.80.

“We are serious in this campaign. We are calling all Surigaonons to stop illegal logging now,” Lt.  Col.  Xerxes Trinidad, the commander of 36th IB, said.

“We will not hesitate to enforce the laws against illegal logging in close coordination with DENR and PNP,” Trinidad said, adding that “We will treat the anti-illegal logging operation as a military operation being deputized by the DENR and as stipulated in the memorandum order in relation to EO No. 23.”

Signed by former president Benigno Aquino III in 2011, EO No. 23 declared a moratorium on cutting and harvesting of timber and also created the Anti-Illegal Logging Task Force, of which the military is a member.
