Tamugan water project to start next year: exec

THE DAVAO City Water District (DCWD) and Apo Agua Infrastructura Inc. will begin next year the construction of their joint venture, the P10 billion potable water project.

As both parties signed an agreement on March 17, DCWD spokesperson Bernardo D. Delima said yesterday during the weekly press conference at SM City Davao Annex that the partners are in the process of securing necessary documents for them to start the establishment of the project.

The Apo Agua Infrastructura Inc., a consortium formed by the Aboitiz Equity Ventures and JV Angeles Construction Corp., will construct the infiltration gallery, raw water transmission pipelines, water treatment plant and treater water transmission pipelines while the water district would set up the reservoirs.

“We are allotting three years for the construction of the project so it may be completed by 2019 or 2020. Once it would be completed, it could produce 109 million cubic meters fit for the water needs of the city,” he said.

Last year, DCWD recorded that the water needs of the city reached to 96 million cubic meters, which could rise to100 million cubic meters of water this year.

With the project, the DCWD will gradually shut down 75% of it production wells as it starts tapping the output of the Tamugan project

It will maintain to operate at least 25% of the production wells in Dumoy.

The water district has currently 56 production wells, 45 are located in Dumoy, Talomo District.

About one-fourth of Tamugan river, he said, will be tapped as water source for the potable water project.

He clarified that the joint venture project with Apo Agua Infrastrura Inc. will not result in privatization. Based on the agreement, he said there was no provision for the consortium to take over on the project.

“It is DCWD who can take over the Tamugan facilities in case the (partner company) fails to supply the contracted volume,” he said, adding that the consortium could not event sell water “to others in and out” of the city.
