Former mayor Elias Lopez first conferred the award in 1969 to Dabawenyos who best exemplified the pioneering spirit and who contributed to the development of the city. One of the first awardees was University of Mindanao and Mindanao Times founder Atty. Guillermo E. Torres.
The Datu Bago Awardees Organization, Inc., through its chairperson, Councilor Pilar C. Braga with the concurrence of Mayor Sara Duterte, bared seven Datu Bago awardees for 2018. The awardees represent various sectors and are cited for their great contribution to the city through their work. It is the highest award the city government bestows on its people.
We know most of them as they have graced the paper as resource persons in various occasions or have contributed articles for publication. Dr. Aland Mizell, one of the awardees, is also a columnist of Mindanao Times, writing every Thursday about international events and how it affects the country.
The awardees are: Bro. Karl Gaspar, Norma T. Javellana, Belen C. Laud, Aland David Mizell, Ricardo N. Obenza, Jr.,Beethoven N. Sur, and Nieto L. Vitto.
The 48th Conferment of Datu Bago Awards 2018 will be one of the major events during the celebration of the 81st Araw ng Davao and the awarding will be on Mar. 13, 2018.
