Tabularasa | WOW! ART FAIR PHILIPPINES 2018

ART Fair Philippines started in 2003. It is one of the most prestigious art exhibits (along with VIVA, Art Stage Singapore, Art Basel Hongkong, ManiART) in South-East Asia.

We (Queenie, Jun Alfon, Jinky Rayo, Alex Alagon, Kublai) attended the 2018 Edition. This featured 54 art galleries, including 2 Singapore, 1 Tokyo, 1 Berlin, 2 HK. For the first time Fine Photo works were also featured.

Here are my impressions:

1. WOW! Professionally-organized and curated. Galleries paid P300 – 350T for the 6-day event. Most sales happened during the 1st 2 days (Preview days).

2. Most prominent Metro-Manila galleries were there + VIVA and Gallery Orange from the Visayas. Notably missing were Mindanao artists. We will correct this at the next ART FAIR.

3. The “STAR” artists were present: Garibay, Co, Borlongan, Ypon, Luz, etc. Of the foreigners, I liked ASHLEY BICKERTON an American hyper-realist from NY who now lives in Bali. I was gonna buy 2 of his 8′ x 8′ canvasses, but at US $175T each – I backed off.

4. My over-all assessment? Some of our Davao artists can take their rightful places alongside the exhibited artists.

I believe our MindART 2019 will try to prove this.

I think Davao Artists’ TECHNIQUES are on par with the other Art Fair exhibitors. Where we can really improve on is the subject matter, the content and the theme of our art works. I suggest we read extensively about Mindanao’s history, folklore, myths of our tri-culture. Let’s view and visit the traditional Moro and Lumad artists, artisans, weavers, carvers, bronze caster, etc. then try to CONTEMPORIZE this context.                 Dinky Munda
