Sultan Kudarat army, cops hunt down ambushers of MILF head, village official

TACURONG CITY — The military here has launched a manhunt against two men who ambushed and killed Wednesday a local leader of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and a barangay kagawad in Barangay Romualdez, Pres. Quirino, Sultan Kudarat.

Colonel Mel Feliciano, 601st Infantry Brigade commander based in Tacurong City, said Manubakan Abdul alias Commander Garrison of the MILF’s 108th base command was declared dead on arrival at a Tacurong City hospital.

His companion, Abdukarim Maslamama, village councilman of Barangay Midkunding, Gen. SK Pendatun, Maguinanao, also died due to multiple gunshot wounds.

Quoting report from Lt. Colonel Markton Abo, 33rd Infantry Battalion commander, said the two were riding in tandem on a motorbike at about 4 p.m. Wednesday when they were ambushed by unidentified gunmen on a dirt road in Barangay Romualdez.

The suspects who were also riding in tandem on a separate motorbike took the MILF’s motorcycle.

Senior Supt. Rex dela Rosa, Sultan Kudarat police chief, said the police have worked with the military to prevent the escalation of the armed skirmishes after reports spread that the MILF official’s followers were set to avenge his death.

A villager was killed last week when members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters attacked a militiaman detachment in Barangay Katiko, Gen. SK Pendatun town, near the border of President Quirino. (PNA)
