Strong quake rocks Mindanao

A STRONG MAGNITUDE 7.2 quake hit Mindanao at 2:13 p.m yesterday.

However, the epicenter was far too deep to cause any damage and casualties or generate a tsunami.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the tremor’s epicenter was traced 223 km southeast of Banguingui (Tongkil), Sulu.

Though the magnitude was high, it has a depth of 625 kilometers. Thus, it isn’t a destructive quake.

The agency said the intensity was felt in Zamboanga City, General Santos City, and even Davao City.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake was measured as a Magnitude 6.9 earthquake located 190km South-Southeast of Tabiauan in the Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao.

The USGS noted the epicenter to be located at 4.459°N 122.607°E.

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake killed nearly 2,000 people on the northern island of Luzon in 1990.
