Soldier killed, 2 others hurt

A SOLDIER was killed and two others were injured in a clash against members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Asuncion, Davao del Norte on Sunday afternoon.In a report from the Police Regional Office (PRO) XI, the fallen soldier was identified as Private First Class Arman Campos.

The two wounded were identified as PFCs Ruben Lambac Jr. and Ralph Ryan Baldomar. The casualties were all members of the Philippine Army’s 46th Infantry Battalion.

Army troopers belonging to the 46th Infantry Battalion, the 60th Infantry Battalion, and the 71st Infantry Battalion – all under the 1001st (Pag-Asa) Infantry Brigade — engaged the Communist rebels in a series of clashes in the boundaries of Compostela Valley and Davao del Norte Sunday.

Capt. Jerry Lamosao, the spokesperson of 10th Infantry Division, said troopers responded to the information given by concerned residents on the extortion activities of the armed groups.

Lamosao said at 3:39 p.m. Sunday, a series of encounters between the soldiers – troopers of the 60IB and 71IB – and the Pulang Bagani Command (PBC) 4 of the Sub-Regional Command (SRC) 4 of the NPA’s Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SMRC) in Camadi District, located in the boundary of Laak, Compostela Valley and Asuncion, Davao del Norte.

At 4:30 p.m. of the same day, another encounter occurred in the area as 46IB troopers were chasing retreating NPAs who were fleeing to Asuncion.

The firefight resulted to the death of one soldier and the injury of the two soldiers.

Government troopers were able to recover eight high-powered firearms and one unexploded Improvised Explosive Device (IED) left by the rebels.

Soldiers, together with police and militiamen, have established checkpoints in the area following the encounters.

In his statement, 60IB Commander Lt. Col Gilbert Ombos said that military operations will continue in areas threatened by the NPAs.

But Ombos emphasized that they are open for the rebels who are willing to surrender and avail of the Comprehensive Local Integration Program (CLIP) of the government.
