SCENE CITY| Women doing their best for other women

CHARTER Day, or the day the Soroptimist International of Davao was founded in Davao City was remembered by the officers and members of the organization on June 10, 2017.

Several reasons made the occasion worth celebrating: in June, 1966 or 51 years ago, the Soroptimist International was chartered with 18 of Davao City’s business and professional women executives as Charter Members. It was the first club chartered outside Metro Manila; the same club organized and chartered eight Soroptimist Clubs in Mindanao; chartered two Venture Clubs; installed a Cancer Detection Clinic (CADET) which has served countless indigent women and lately expanded its services to include free vaccination against cervical cancer.

As the lead organization of WOMYNET, it spearheaded, lobbied and succeeded in the setting up of a correctional facility (CIW) in Mindanao at Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte. Funded by the Congressional Ladies Foundation, SID’s Project Ginhawa trained Barangay Women in the skill of hand paper crafting from indigenous materials. It also organized and hosted a Mindanao for Peace Conference and helped install a Women’s Desk at strategic PNP precincts in the city.

SI Davao takes pride in having adopted a facility of CSSDO for girls 18 years old and below who are victims of sexual violence, supplied them with school supplies, uniforms and medical/dental services.
