SCENE CITY| WHAT IS EARTH HOUR?

DURING last Tuesday’s SpELL Societe Forum at The Royal Mandaya Hotel, we were informed that we will be observing another activity geared towards saving our environment. This was announced by Henry U. Tejadio, Jr. of Habagat Davao Earth Hour and Jojo Harvey Bryan Malnegro of The Bureau of Jail Management.

We are often asked – “What is Earth Hour”? The information relayed is very clear – it is an hour or should we say 60 minutes to protect the planet. Around the globe, millions of people, businesses, and landmarks set aside an hour to host events, switch off their lights, and make noise for climate change action. This year Earth Hour is at 8:30 p.m. on March 25.

Earth Hour belongs to you. Each year, millions of you come together to make Earth Hour happen. Coordinated by WWF and other volunteer organizations, together we’re shining a light on the need for action on climate change.

The two advocates carried this message, “Earth Hour is more than an event. It is a movement. Over the last 10 years, earth hour has achieved massive environmental impact. Together with your support, we’re helping change laws, lives and our planet! How great is that?”

It is so much more than just an hour …Over the years, Earth Hour participants have helped make some pretty amazing things happen. From changing laws to funding solar-powered homes, together, we’ve made a real, positive impact on our planet.

BJMP’s Jojo Malnegro says the jails are congested due to an increase in the number of inmates. Their advocacy is to keep the youth busy with activities like biking to keep them away from vices and being involved in criminality as a preventive step in avoiding occasions that may lead to imprisonment.

Padyak, Sikad-Lakad is organized by Habagat Outdoors and Nightride in cooperation with the city of Davao as an Earth Hour event.
