SCENE CITY| Philippine Boatbuilding and sailing in Davao

IN ONE of our SpELL Societe forum held at Cuppycakes early February, 2017, we learned that The Philippine Home Boatbuilders’ Yacht Club and GetWetAsia are organizing a Family Boatbuilding Weekend (FBW) that will re-introduce small boat sailing in Davao Region.

Maricar Cervantes of GetWetAsia Philllippines/MarB Concepts told us all about the sailing revolution that is about to happen.

Sailing is widely recognized all over the world as an amazing recreational activity. As an archipelago of over 7,000 islands and a year-round sailing-friendly conditions, sailing in the Philippines is an adventure, a stress-reliever, an experience with nature and unknown to many, quite an affordable hobby. It makes one wonder, what is keeping many Filipinos from cruising to wondrous destinations with only the wind to propel them to our many islands?

All this is about to change. The Philippine Home Boatbuilders’ Yacht Club and GetWetAsia Philippines are organizing a Family Boatbuilding Weekend. PHYBC’s series of Family Boatbuilding Weekends has demystified sailing from its association with luxurious yachting.. It has created new boat builders from anyone who could spend the amount needed equivalent to the price of a smartphone. Now it is easy for families and other individuals to discover the wonders of harnessing the wind to navigate the open seas and reach destinations normally difficult to reach.

Since not everyone has carpentry experience, the time, the space or tools to build their own boat, the FBW organizers have pre-fabricated a boat-building kit of a well-known sailboat design that is easy to build as well as sail.

This coming April 29 to May 01, 2017, a Family Boat Building Labor Day Weekend is scheduled to be held in Samal Island, Davao. Boatbuilding Weekends is a great way of introducing would-be boat builders and sailors to the art of building boats. PHBYC is inviting families, companies, schools and groups of friends. Activities such as this develop teamwork, creativity and camaraderie.

At FBW 2017 participants will not only build a boat, they will learn to sail it too, PHYBC sailing instructors will be on hand to teach one member from each participating team how to rig and sail the Oz Goose boat.

The event will be held at the Monfort Beachfront, Barangay Tambo, Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte.
