San Miguel Davao Aguilas FC rips FC Meralco Sparks’ perfect PFL record, ends with 2-2 draw

TAGUM, Davao del Norte – In what seemed to be a David vs. Goliath match, wherein San Miguel Davao Aguilas Football Club, went up against top seed FC Meralco Manila (FCMM), the home boys sent the Sparks a very clear message, it was its hometurf.

For over 90 minutes, the crowd of more than 4,000 spectators in a packed stadium, at the Davao del Norte Sports Complex, held its breath in what seemed to be a roller-coaster ride of a march. San Miguel Davao Aguilas gave its fans a bigger reason to support football in its home stead, and showed that it can ground into halt the Sparks perfect PFL joyride.

Fans were seen waiting for the Aguilas outside their locker room in a seeming celebration of having new hometown heroes.

“There’s no question, it’s a massive confidence boost for the team. I think the bigger picture is for us is, as we grew as a team, we got back into the game and we showed a lot of spirit. And from day 1 I’ve said, we will be competitive, and that’s what we proved during the game. It is great to have so many supporters here. It is great to be back home. We believe in this team, we believe in this club. I’m very proud of the effort and collectively as a group, we are all very proud and we certainly take it as a win,” said Australian coach Gary Philips.

“We are still in a gelling process as we grew together as a team. We are currently in sixth place in the eight-team standings. It was a crucial match-up for us,” said coaching staff Melchor Anzures in yesterday’s Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the SM City Davao.

Anzures graced the weekly sports gab along with San Miguel Davao Aguilas’ Jason Cordova (defender), Richard Talaroc (midfielder), Gerald Layumas (defender) and Princeton Joshue (midfielder).

Their next match-up will be on June 25 at 4 p.m. wherein they will play host next to the Ilocos United Football Club (IUFC). This will be the second time that both teams will go against each other. Their last match-up ended with a 1-1 draw held in Vigan, Ilocos Norte.

On June 28, the San Miguel Davao Aguilas Football Club will host former UFL champions Global Cebu Football Club.
