Request Denied

City not allowing Last 2 collectors to resume illegal acts

THE CITY government has refused the request of “Last 2” operators and bet collectors to let them continue their illegal gambling operation while authorities are looking for alternative livelihood.

On Monday, around 100 ushers gathered outside City Hall to seek an audience with Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio following the police crackdown on illegal gambling.

But City Legal Officer Raul Nadela, Jr., the mayor chief of staff who talked with the ushers, said the city government could not grant their request.

“We told them (ushers) that it was a difficult request since what they are doing is illegal,” Nadela told reporters.

Nadela said the local government is always ready to assist those affected by the crackdown on illegal gambling.

Nadela said the City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO) has listed the names of the ushers to possibly include them in the government’s ‘Negosyo ‘ta Day’ livelihood program.

The Educational Benefits Services Unit (EBSU), Nadela said, is also ready to take in qualified dependents whose parents may be affected by the crackdown on the illegal numbers game.

Following orders from Police Director General Ronald Bato, the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) has launched an all-out campaign against illegal gambling in the city.

According to the protesting ushers, the police crackdown has affected their earnings.

While knowing that “Last 2” operation is illegal, ushers said it’s their only source of income.

“We know it is (illegal), but where will we get our income now?” an usher said.

One of the ushers, a grandmother, said that she has already sent one of her grandchildren through college because of her income in collecting bets.

“Last 2″ refers to the last two digits of Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) draws—typically three times a day to include Swertres and Lotto.

Bets as low as P5 can win as much as P350, thus the popularity of the game, and can win in any of the three raffle draws aired every day with the same betted pair of numbers.
