Rep. Karlo Nograles as Sambo chair

THE DAVAO-based Pilipinas Sambo Federation Inc. (PSFI) has chosen Representative Karlo Nograles of the first district of Davao City as its chair, which the solon has accepted.

PSFI is the national governing body of Sambo in the Philippines and is recognized by the Federation International de Sambo (FIAS), the world governing body for Sambo, a Russian martial art and combat sport which is now being played in 80 countries.

“Under the chairmanship of Congressman Nograles, we plan to utilize his existing grassroots program to introduce the sports of Sambo nationally especially to the youth, who will greatly benefit from the effects of its inherent values formation,” PSFI president Atty. Paolo Claudio said.

Claudio said with Nograles as its chair, Pilipinas Sambo will be able to promote the sport in the country and send delegations to international tournaments.

The Philippines officially joined the list of Sambo countries when the PSFI sent a lone delegate to the 2015 World Championships in Casablanca, Morocco.

This coming 2017 World Championship in Sochi, Russia which will be held from November 9-12, the country will have two female sambists participating.

PSFI has organized the first Sambo national tournament held in 2016 in Abreeza Mall, Davao City. Plans are underway for more national tournaments, which is one of the requirements for Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) accreditation.

Last 2016, the group met with the Russian Ambassador Igor Khovaev to discuss possible opportunities to deepen the Russian-Philippine friendship, and it was learned that one way is through Sambo.

Sambo is a popular sport in Russia; its head-of-state Russian President Vladimir Putin is a master a multiple champion of the sport. (PIA XI)
