Region generated P11.187-M in tourist receipts as of June

THE DAVAO Region reaped P11.187 million in tourist receipts in the first half of the year, data from the Regional Development Council (RDC) bared.

Priscilla R. Sonido, assistant regional director of National Economic and Development Authority XI, said the region, as of the period, was about 30% of target of P37.274 million tourist receipts and about half of what was generated last year at P23.9 million, based on the report of the Department of Tourism.

The target was under the Davao Regional Development Plan 2017-2022, which was crafted by the RDC XI.

“These were generated from 1.154 million local tourists and 70,423 foreign tourists who visited the region as of the first semester,” Sonido said.

The Davao International Airport (DIA), also known as Francisco Bangoy International Airport, has 10 domestic routes and one international route as of the first half of the year, Sonido said.

The DIA has new domestic routes like Davao to Tacloban, Caticlan, Clark, Puerto Princesa and Dumaguete. Its lone international route was Davao to Singapore via SilkAir and Cebu Pacific.

By December, it will have another international route, which would link the city and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This connectivity would be serviced by budget carrier AirAsia and was officially launched in August during the Davao Investment Conference.

Anthony Francis Fernandes, chief executive officer of AirAsia, said this is their first international connectivity from Davao in line on their plan to connect the city to nine more other international destinations within the next three years.

“We will bring the world to Davao,” Fernandes said.
