R & R in Pattaya

PATTAYA City is one of the less known destinations in Thailand among Filipinos, but with the Arabians and Westerners, this little Thai city that never sleeps is in the bucket list of any wanderlust. Pattaya is a beach resort city in Thailand, famous among tourists and expatriates.

The name Pattaya, according to Wikipedia, evolved from the march of Phraya Tak, later known as King Taksin, with his army from their city to another. But as they passed by the vicinity of Pattaya, troops of the local leader tried to intercept them, but was inspired by their gentle demeanor and disciplined aura as soldiers, hence, making the local troops surrendered to Phraya Tak’s army and eventually joined them in their march.

The place the armies confronted each other was thereafter known as “Thap Phraya”, which means “the army of the Phraya”. This later became Pattaya, the name of the wind blowing from the southwest to the northeast, at the beginning on the rainy season. Pattaya was a small fishing village before the 1960s. However, during the Vietnam War, American soldiers stationed in Thailand US bases were given a week of rest and relaxation in this place, where they were able to enjoy the place and its resort-ish ambience.

When they returned to their respective assignments, words spread about the beauty and allure of Pattaya, making it a hot alternative to Bangkok among expatriates. Pattaya then became into a popular beach resort destination.

Now greatly expanded and well-known among foreign tourists, Pattaya is said to attract almost 4 million tourists every year. Fishermen’s huts along the beach were then replaced with resort hotels and shopping centers, including Asia’s largest beach front shopping mall, the Central Festival Pattaya Beach Mall and Hilton Hotel. Wikipedia says, today Pattaya is putting an effort to clean-up it’s image of becoming a family-oriented seaside destination, after the sex industry’s proliferation in their past years.

Go to Pattaya like its your best holiday of the year, spend more time at the beach with a beer, watch people from different nations pass by in the side of the street, experience an authentic Thai massage, and appreciate a  unique gift of rest and relaxation, the Pattaya way.
