PRRD to councilors: Join war against drugs

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte asked local lawmakers to join in his war against drugs.

This as Philippine Councilors League (PCL) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency to enable councilors to help in the reporting of those engaged in illegal drugs.

“I need our councilors to craft ordinances that will support and sustain our campaign against illegal drugs,” President Duterte said in a message read by Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs Francis Tolentino during the PCL gathering at SMX Convention.

“The illegal drug trade has distorted and errored the moral fiber of our society (as) it has already creeped into our communities and (has taken) hold of several government officials. (With) this reason that I implore, I asked the PCL to help us stop this drug menace from becoming a problem that we cannot defeat,” the President said in his message.

PDEA chief Aaron Aquino, in his speech, told councilors to have an effective reformation program so the drug quitters will not return to their illegal activities.

Police Director General Ronald dela Rosa also asked the councilors to support the police force in the war against illegal drugs and crime. “We must demonstrate our unity and resolve to put an end to the drug problem.”

FEDERAL CALL

The president, in the message read by Tolentino, also asked the councilors to help decide the most suitable federal set-up for the country.

“As member of your local legislative bodies help us promote this reform in your respective jurisdiction. Your efforts are crucial in laying down a stronger foundation for our nation. Let us unite in order to build cities and municipalities that are more productive to our people’s development,” the president said.

The president also hopes that the PCL can come up with learning programs to address the needs of the local communities as it is their mission to help members to become proactive and responsive to the needs of their constituents.

“Let us continue to aspire for excellent governance that cultivates a more progressive and prosperous country. With the help of this event, may you become more dedicated and more enlightened lawmakers in your respective localities,” the president said.

Around 3,000 local lawmakers from the cities and towns nationwide gathered in the city for the PCL event.
