Probe welcomed

Mayor Sara unfazed with Ombudsman’s investigation on bank accounts

MAYOR Sara Duterte-Carpio is not disturbed by the Ombudsman’s investigation on her bank accounts.

“I welcome it so that we can finally answer all accusations in the proper venue,” Mayor Duterte said in a message released to reporters Thursday afternoon.

The first family, including the city mayor and her brothers, Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte and Sebastian Duterte, are currently the subject of an investigation of the Office of the Ombudsman for their wealth.

The complaint was based on the report submitted by Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV on the alleged illegal wealth of the family.

Trillanes also requested the Anti-Money Laundering Council to determine the nature of the wealth of the Dutertes, especially that of President Rodrigo Duterte.

The Ombudsman found the complaint sufficient and is now looking into the accounts of the first family, including President Rodrigo Duterte’s common-law-wife Honeylet Avancena and daughter Veronica.

Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, for her part, has inhibited in the case, as she is related to the Dutertes by affinity.

Mayor Carpio’s husband, lawyer Manases Carpio, was also linked by Sen. Trillanes to the alleged Davao group, which reportedly uses its influence to allow smuggled goods, including drugs, at the ports controlled by the Bureau of Customs.

During the Senate hearing, Carpio and Vice Mayor Duterte denied being part of the group.

Austria, in a press conference, yesterday also denied the existence of the Davao group. He said they only deal with legitimate businessmen.

“There is no group,” he said. “Maybe all of them (legitimate businesses) because they are all Davaoenos, … in all seriousness, nobody has a monopoly over things.”
