President Duterte to meet 1,000 IPs in Panacan today

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte is expected to talk to Lumads during the two-day Indigenous Peoples (IP) Leaders Summit culmination in Felix Apolinario Naval Station in Camp Panacan today.

Maj. Ezra Balagtey, spokesperson of Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom), said the event sought to discuss and resolve issues confronting the IPs, and provide them with a venue to air their concerns. Around 1,000 Lumads participated.

On Wednesday, the event was held in Green Heights Convention Center in Buhangin. Today, they will meet with executives of different government agencies. It would also be the first time they will meet with President.

Meanwhile, an alleged squad leader and a member of the New People’s Army (NPA) surrendered to the 28th Infantry battalion in Pantukan, Compostela Valley on Tuesday.

Capt. Andrew Linao, the civil- military operations (CMO) officer of 701st Infantry Brigade, identified them as brothers Jay-Ar and Jonel, of Guerrilla Front 2, Sub-regional Committee 2, Southern Mindanao Regional Command.

Jay-Ar and Jonel were recruited in March 2012 and October 2017, respectively. They also brought along two improvised grenades, one improvised bomb and two pieces of explosives. They told soldiers that they were convinced by their relatives to surrender.

They were brought to the Lupon health Center to undergo a medical exam, and are presently undergoing custodial debriefing at the headquarters of the 28thIB.
