Population census to start next month, says official

THE PHILIPPINE Statistics Authority (PSA) is starting the 2015 Census of Population (PopCen) on August 10 to determine the actual population of the country.

PSA XI interim regional director of Jaime S. Paller said Thursday during the agency’s report on the economic performance of Davao Region at Ritz Hotel that they have hired 5,781, most of them are enumerators, to do the survey.

“This is aimed to provide policy makers with updated data on population count,” Paller said.

The PSA is mandated to conduct the census pursuant to Republic Act No. 10625, a law that reorganized the country’s statistical system. This will be the 14th census of population done in the country since the first census in 1903.

The last census was done in 2010, where the Davao Region’s population stood at 4.469 million.

In a briefer on PopCen, “the listing and enumeration for the PopCen 2015 will last for about 25 working days (including Saturdays and may include Sundays and holidays), from August 10 to September 6.” All households are obliged to provide complete answers.

Sec. 27 of RA 10625 cited that “respondents of primary data collection activities such as censuses and sample surveys are obliged to give truthful and complete answers to statistical inquiries. The gathering, consolidation, and analysis of such data shall likewise be done in the most truthful and credible manner.”

Failure to provide truthful and complete answers to statistical inquiries, the law added, will be penalized with a fine of P100,000 and one year imprisonment.
