Police won’t drop case vs cop who accidentally killed mom

POLICE yesterday insisted that they will still file a case against the cop who accidentally killed her mother while dry-firing his gun inside their house in Purok 1, Barangay San Roque, New Corella, Davao del Norte on Saturday evening.

Chief Insp. Milgrace Driz, spokesperson of Police Regional Office XI, said PO1 Emmanuel M. Dumapig, 24, assigned at the Regional Mobile Force Battalion (RMFB) at PRO 11, Camp Catitipan, will face reckless imprudence resulting in parricide and grave misconduct.

“The administrative case will automatically be filed even if nobody is interested to file the criminal case,” she said.

The suspect’s father, Enrico, told investigators that his son was dry-firing his gun in their living room but did not expect the firearm was still loaded.

He pulled the trigger and the bullet pierced the thin wall and hit the mother, Emma, inside the bedroom.

The 49-year-old victim succumbed to one gunshot wound on her right chin.

The father also believed that the whole thing was an accident. He thinks that it was tragic that his son feels responsible for the death of his mother.

The family declined to have the mother’s body undergo an autopsy despite the advice of the police. They are also not interested to file a case against Dumapig.

Dumapig surrendered to the on duty barangay security after the said incident.

The victim’s wake is at their residence in Purok 1, Brgy. San Roque, Davao del Norte.

However, the chief of the New Corella Municipal Police Station Insp. Ayban will still pursue the criminal case against Dumapig.

“They will file a case to show that the (police) station is doing something since this is a public crime,” Driz said. β€œIt’s now up to the court to decide soon.”
