Police confirm NPA gunned down cop

THE POLICE Regional Office (PRO) XI confirmed yesterday that the New People’s Army (NPA) is responsible for killing PO3 Wilfredo Garol Jr. of the Baguio police on Nov. 13 in Sitio Luman, Barangay New Valencia, Tugbok District.

Chief Supt. Manuel Gaerlan, director of PRO XI, told reporters in an interview yesterday at the sidelines of the change of command ceremony held at Naval Station Felix Apolinario in Camp Panacan, that based on their intelligence report, they confirmed the perpetrators to be communist rebels.

“We don’t want to divulge any tactical information as of this time as we are pursuing the case,” Gaerlan said.

“We have the description of the two, but no names yet. Of course, these members of the NPA are using aliases,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Davao City Police Office already gave P100,000 cash to the family of Garol from the force’s mortuary fund.

Garol died from eight gunshot wounds on the different parts of his body, the autopsy results showed.

According to the report, the victim was killed by two of his hitchhiking passengers in Barangay New Valencia, Tugbok District on Monday at 7:45 a.m.

Garol Jr., 34, resident of Rubber Village in Calinan District, was assigned as intelligence operative of Baguio Police Precinct. His firearm was stolen.

He had just come from bringing his wife, a teacher, to school and was on his way home when he was flagged down by two men. He was shot as they were passed by Purok 5, Sitio Luman.
