PMAP cites UM as best employer in Mindanao

The People Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP) recognized the University of Mindanao as the best employer in Mindanao this year, an official of the school said Wednesday.

At the Wednesdays @ Habi at Kape – Abreeza, Reynaldo C. Castro, UM vice president for external relations and international affairs, said the university bested four other finalists in Mindanao and is set to compete with the finalists in Luzon, Visayas and the National Capital Region.

“We were surprised that we were nominated,” said Castro, pointing out that the university never knew who nominated it as based on the rules of the award, anyone can nominate either private organization or government office.

After being informed of its nomination, the UM was then evaluated on its best practices in dealing with  human resources, along with 32 other organizations vying for the award.

The award was based on several criteria that included line management and human resources partnership, performance focus, leadership approaches, people engagement, and responsibilities.

Castro said the university, among the premier institutions in this part of the country, has “installed so many quality assurance systems,” including the certification from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), an international body that establishes standards for companies and other organizations.

The university, he said, has instituted a system so it could “listen to our customers, the employees” so that they can air their concerns through surveys that it conducts regularly.

Last month, the university received the award in Cagayan de Oro, with Dr. Guillermo P. Torres Jr., UM president, leading the group that received it. He was joined by Gloria E. Detoya, UM chief operations officer.

The award was institutionalized in 1977 to recognize organizations and government offices that pushes for the advancement of human resources in these organization.
