PICE calls on more women participation in infra dev’t

The first woman president of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers called on more women participation in infrastructure development as the Duterte administration is going full blast on its Build Build Build program.

“It’s time to appreciate the role of women in infrastructure development,” said Ma. Catalina Cabral, also the undersecretary of the Planning and Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Service of the Department of Public Works and Highways.
The Build Build Build program of the national government is a huge boost in accelerating the country’s development. But the construction sector is in need of more engineers to achieve its goal.
“We need more engineers, we need more people in construction sector,” Cabral said, as he encouraged the youth to take up engineering courses. She especially urged young girls to not be intimidated in joining a male-dominated profession.
According to the Commission on Higher Education, as seen on the Global Gap Index of 2016 – 2017 of the Philippines, there are only 29% females enrolled in engineering and technology courses.
On June 23, 2018, the world celebrated the International Women Engineering Day to raise the profile of women in engineering department and to introduce the various career opportunities that the industry have for female engineers.
“While there are many challenges for women, we have to make sure we doubly work hard. The opportunities are there,” Cabral added.( By Regina Mae Ronquillo )
