Pag-asa fire torches 100 houses, kills grandpa

A SEPTUAGENARIAN died in a four-hour fire that damaged almost 100 houses in Pag-asa, Bankerohan, Barangay 5-A yesterday morning.

Supt. Honee Alagano, city fire marshal of the Bureau of the Fire and Protection (BFP) XI, said the fire started around 11:40 a.m., declared under control by 1:35 p.m. and was totally declared fire out by 4:40 pm.

The victim, Rodolfo Hilado, 71, was trapped inside one of the houses.

Hilado was rushed to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) but expired at the hospital due to burn injuries.

SFO4 Ramil Gillado, fire investigator, said they are still investigating the cause of the fire.

At least 180 families in Purok 5 were affected by the fire that hit rows of houses made of light materials.

At least P500,000 were said to have been damaged.

A responding firetruck from Toril station hit a red Toyota Vios car that was parked along San Pedro Extension, causing damage to both vehicles.

Last year, about 350 houses and establishments were burned down in a three-hour fire that hit the same area and five other nearby puroks, including the Pag-asa market, in the same barangay, affecting around 800 families.
