Pa and son plead not guilty on murder, slay try charge

A FATHER and son implicated in the murder of a businessman and shooting of a police officer inside an establishment at Km. 12, Barangay Sasa in October last year enterted a plea of not guilty in yesterday’s arraignment.

Former soldiers, 2Lt. Rex Veñegas and his son, Pvt. Mark Ryan Veñegas, who was assigned to the 25th Infantry Battalion, pleaded not guilty on charge of murder and frustrated murder before Judge Emmanuel Carpio of RTC Branch 16.

The two accused, handcuffed and wearing yellow detainee shirts, were escorted by jail guards during the hearing.

Records showed that around 11 p.m. of Oct. 26, the accused, both armed with .45 caliber pistols, arrived at the videoke bar and attacked Rolando Jumamoy, 42, establishment owner and resident of Doña Salud, Sasa.

PO3 Rey Alburo of Sasa Police Precinct responded to the incident and identified himself as a policeman but was shot by the father. The policeman fired back.

Mark Ryan then pulled a gun and shot Alburo in the chest who died at the San Pedro Hospital. Rex Veñegas was also brought to Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) while Mark Ryan was arrested.

According to the investigators, the motive of the incident was love triangle.

Recovered from the scene were 10 cartridges from a .45 caliber pistol, one live bullet and a slug which were all turned over to the PNP Crime Laboratory.
