P80-M Halal processing site to rise in Davao City

DAVAO CITY can host a Halal processing site under the National Meat Inspection Service of the Department of Agriculture.

This was revealed during the weekly Kapehan sa SM held here Monday.

Dr. Clarita tellano, City Veterinarian’s Office Meat, Livestock, and Fish Inspection Division head, said during the press conference in SM City that the details of the P80-million project is still being ironed out by the City Economic Enterprises Office.

The project includes meat processing and cold storage, among others, to ensure Halal compliance. It will be located either in Calinan District or within the existing slaughterhouse complex in Barangay Ma-a, Talomo District.

The project is a grant under the Department of Agriculture, Tellano said.

The news comes as a Muslim councilor has asked the executive department to draft the implementing rules and regulations of the Halal Ordinance, a landmark measure passed by the city council this year.

The measure ensures that products intended to be Halal do not mix with haram (or forbidden) products, especially meats.

The ordinance requires a dedicated Halal lane in every large grocery area in the city, where Muslims can be assured food products that will pass through the counter are not prohibited.

The measure penalizes erring establishments ranging from a fine to the cancellation of the business permit. However, the city executive has yet to release the implementing rules and regulations of the said measure.
