Over 500 join Angels Walk at SM City Davao

IN CELEBRATION of Autism Consciousness Week, the Autism Society Philippines along with SM City Davao mounted the Angels’ Walk last January 25.

This year, the celebration’s theme “Autism Inclusive Philippines: Aim High! Fly High!” inspires awareness, acceptance and inclusion of persons with autism (PWAs) in society as well as promotes action by the public and private sectors towards enabling PWAs to live with dignity, enjoy equal rights and access, function independently and contribute productively.

The Autism Society Philippines (ASP) is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to the well-being of persons with autism spectrum disorder. The ASP has been in the forefront of providing services and training to families living with autism.

“SM has always been proactive in promoting a barrier-free and non-handicapping mall for everyone. In the past years, we have set-up PWD-friendly facilities in SM City Davao (and all SM malls) to further facilitate accessibility. Our front liners—mall and tenant employees and security personnel are also regularly oriented on how to handle customer with autism,” assistant mall manager Engr. Nick Santos shares.

Apart from personnel orientation, SM City Davao has also offered Sensory-Friendly Movie Screening in the past years to provide an avenue for families with members with autism to enjoy movie-watching with an environment that the PWAs can bear.

Last Sunday, about 200 SM City Davao mall tenants joined the hundreds of families and friends of people with autism in a parade around the mall to further raise public awareness on Autism. An estimated 12,000 participants also amplified the same message of awareness and inclusion at the Mall of Asia Arena.(pr)
