OMB-Min transfers to new building

THE OFFICE of the Ombudsman in Mindanao transferred to its new building yesterday after 29 years renting at the Herrera Building in Alvarez Street, this city.

Its new address is at Libra St, GSIS Village, just behind the GSIS Building in Matina.

In a simple ceremony, the inauguration was attended by Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, Office of the President Undersecretary Jesus Melchor Quitain, City Administrator Zulieka Lopez, Chief of Staff Raul Nadela Jr. and other local officials and executives.

The new site, according to Ombudsman Morales, is not “just a place where OMB Mindanao employees report for work. Most importantly, it is the place where citizens in this part of the country find refuge in the face of government abuse.”

She said the “greater foundation of OMB Mindanao as an institution lies in the integrity of its people” and “measured by the strength of their moral courage in the unrelenting pursuit of good governance. It is gauged by the steadfastness of their keen dedication in addressing people’s grievance against government inaction, delay or abuse.”

Mayor Sara Duterte, in a message read by City Administrator Lopez, said she hopes the new workplace will inspire the institution to “protect the people of Mindanao against social injustices and promote efficiency, integrity, and accountability in public service.”

She urged them “to act promptly to complaints against officers or employees of the government and enforce administrative, civil and criminal liability when the evidence warrants in order to promote efficient service by the government to the people.”

With a total contract cost of P180,677, 299, the groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site on May 7, 2015. The construction of the new building started on Jan. 15, 2016 and was finished on Nov. 8, 2017.

Deputy Ombudsman Rodolfo Elman said the new building is a “magnificent edifice” but the more “enduring grandeur and legacy lies not in the beauty of the building, but in the people who give life to the structure— their integrity, competence, and passion to do what is right and just. This is the true foundation upon which this building stands.”
