NTC to run after unlicensed equipment, phones

THE NATIONAL Telecommunication (NTC) XI will run after unlicensed communication equipment and unlicensed dealers of cellular phones in the Davao Region.

Speaking at the AFP-PNP press conference at Royal Mandaya hotel yesterday, NTC XI Director Nelson Canete said his office has decided to intensify its campaign against these illegal products because of their proliferation.

“Because there are many unlicensed cellular phones dealer, our problem with them (is) they hide whenever there are NTC (officials),”Canete said, adding the agency will coordinate with the law enforcement agencies in conducting these operations.

Canete hopes that the operations will result in revenues for the agency even as he noted the increase in the number of business permits of cellular phone dealers and telecommunications equipment from 10,000 last year to 17,000 this year.

“Cellular phones dealers will violate (the law) if they sell non- NTC certified cellphones,” he said, citing the case of some dealers in one of the business areas are selling non-NTC certified cellphones.

He said that if the agency intensify its campaign in the city, although he said it is difficult to do.

The agency is in the process not only with the uniformed personnel but other concerned agencies as he expects the flooding of these prohibited products as the Yuletide season is approaching.

“We also warn those buying cellphones (from) online stores must not purchase them because they are not authorized dealers,” he said.
