NGO to hold dinner for a cause

THE HOUSE of Hope is staging dinner for a cause on Saturday at Grand Regal Hotel to raise P1.5 million for children with cancer.

Cheryl Gomez, fund  raising manager of the non-government organization, said yesterday in Wednesdays @ Habi at Kape in Abreeza Mall that each ticket costs P3,000 while a table good for 10 persons is at P28,000.

“We already hit the quota to have 300 people but we hope that there would be more who would join as the venue can accommodate up to 500 people,” Gomez said.

The proceeds, she said, will be provided to children with cancer aged eight months up to 18 years old to fund their diagnostic tests, medications and treatment as these children are also staying at the House of Hope, a temporary home for the children with cancer at Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC).

They, she said, are raising funds as the treatment for a child with leukemia alone would cost P1.7 million. “Every year, we have 250 new cases of children with cancer,” Gomez said.

The House of Hope also caters to children from all over Mindanao.

At present, Gomez said there are six out of 10 children with cancer who are cured unlike in 2004 when the survival rate was just 20%. “Cancer is really highly curable,” she said.

The House of Hope is a project of Rotary Club of Waling-Waling Davao in coordination with the Davao Children’s Cancer Fund Inc.

In a website of SPMC, the House of Hope “(has) served about 5,000 children and caregivers since its inauguration in August 2007. House of Hope decreased treatment abandonment and provided a clean and healing environment for children with cancer.”
