New SK rep to handle brgy. blood donation ordinance

The city council is assigning the task of the voluntary blood donation ordinance to the committee on youth and sports development, Vice Mayor Bernard Al-ag said.

This, as the legislative body swore in its newest member, Sangguniang Kabataan Federation president Jaffar Marahomsalic, as the chair of the committee.

In an interview, Al-ag said the committee should not only focus on the traditional tasks associated with youth legislators, such as sports leagues and anti-drug programs.

“We want him to immediately start with the blood donation program,” Al-ag said.

The ordinance, which was passed last year, encourages barangays to initiate blood donation campaigns.

This was an amendment to an earlier measure passed in 2010 which sought for voluntary blood donations in the city’s barangays.

Al-ag said that the SK representative will take charge of handling the movement of each of the SK councilors of each barangay, taking advantage of the 10% budget of the local government unit of each of the 182 barangays.

The blood donation program is a response to the need for a steady supply of blood to be given to those in need.

The Sangguniang Kabataan will work with the Philippine Red Cross, the Davao Blood Center, and the City Health Office for the program.

According to the ordinance, the program will also recognize the most outstanding barangays, through an annual awarding of achievers.
