Megaworld’s Smart Township in Davao City

A last minute invitation done through text messaging is a definite NO! for me but this time, I had to think twice when it’s about Megaworld’s development in our beloved city. I also missed the year-end party last December, 2017, hosted by Megaworld’s Senior Vice President and Head of Business Development and Leasing Group, the suave Jericho P. Go, and the Senior Assist. Vice President and Head of Public Relations and Media Affairs, the charismatic Harold Geronimo, as I was out of town. So this was a makeup attendance for me. The enlightening media encounter with both high caliber Megaworld gentlemen held at the Park Inn by Radisson last February 8, 2017, is all about “Megaworld’s development of the Davao Park District into a Smart Township.” The 11-hectare mixed-use development of Megaworld will highlight the features of a “township of the future,” definitely a first in Mindanao. “This is one development Davaoeños could truly be proud of. Indeed, Mindanaoans time has come. With the Davao Park District to be classified as ‘iTownship,’ it will integrate digital technology, design innovations and connectivity into the entire development,” announced Jericho Go with much confidence as he continued, “Our goal is to future-proof our first township here in Mindanao. This means, there will be features and facilities within the township that maximize smart innovations, use of internet and digital lifestyle. The Davao Park District will become the township of the future.” “You will be amazed as the iTownship concept will materialize in the Davao Park District. The 11-hectare township in Lanang, Davao City, will feature fiber optic-ready infrastructure, designated bike lanes and bike rental systems, LED-powered signages and digital walls, creative pedestrian crosswalks and urban art installations, LED and solar-powered streetlamps, vertical open spaces and gardens, green and art roofing, public and street WIFI access, electric car charging stations, and a Township Operations Center for 24/7 security and safety monitoring, among others,” detailed the rather stressed Harold Geronimo who stood in contrast to the cool Jericho P. Go. Indeed, this Ilonggo has gone a long way through his own blood, sweat and tears, from his being a TV newscaster in Bacolod City to his sterling performance as a Megaworld biggie these days. Jericho P. Go and Harold C. Geronimo enlighten the media on Megaworld’s future smart township Davao’s Megaworld iTownship is envisioned to be another economic boom town in Mindanao replicating the dynamic “live-work-play-learn” model pioneered by the Megaworld and Suntrust Chairman, Andrew L. Tan. The creation of the Megaworld iTownship is truly within the view of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte who strongly urges local and foreign investors to put up businesses in the other areas of the country to spread economic opportunities and growth to counter poverty; and to boost the needed changes from the long drawn underdevelopment and stagnation of areas outside Imperial Manila which the President describes as an already ‘Dead City.’ But wasn’t it just recently when foreign business leaders also warned of Metro Manila and key cities in the country like Cebu and Davao of being on their way of becoming “uninhabitable” owing to the worsening traffic congestion? Jericho Go sees otherwise when he stated, “We see Davao City as a ‘key city of the future’ in the country so we want to be ready for what the future brings. We have designated teams to carefully study what we can put here on the immediate term and on the long term. From design, smart technology, mobility and connectivity, energy efficiency as well as safety and security, we will put in place all these features to benefit those who live, work and play in the township.” From the Megaworld’s representatives’ audiovisual presentation, even the office towers in the township will be equipped with the most modern facilities which highlight safety and security as priority. The 14-storey, P1.2 billion Davao Finance Center, which hopefully, will be completed within the first half of 2018, will feature nine elevators with one designated for the parking floors. “It will have its own Automatic Fire Suppression System, Fire Detection and Alarm Systems, dedicated fire water storage tank, three fire exits with fire-rated pressurized doors for smoke-proofing as well as state-of-the-art 24/7 CCTV and communication system…We will be extra-compliant to what the National and Local Fire Codes require because the safety and security of our office tenants will always remain to be our top priority,” assured Go. Aside from the Davao Finance Center, Megaworld is also building One Republic Plaza and the Emperador House for office spaces. The local city council of Davao has endorsed the accreditation of the Davao Park District as an economic zone for Information Technology under the Philippine Economic Zone Authority. The Davao Park District is one of the 23 townships and integrated lifestyle communities that Megaworld is developing all over the country. This Mindanao project comes on the heels of Megaworld Corporation’s highly successful township developments such as the amazing Iloilo Business Park in Iloilo City; Mactan Newtown in Cebu; Newport City in Pasay; Eastwood City in Quezon City; Lucky Chinatown and Cityplace in Binondo; and Taguig City’s McKinley Hill, McKinley West, Uptown and Forbestown. In the last 28 years, the Megaworld Group has already built over 660 residential developments, 54 office towers, and 15 lifestyle malls all over the Philippines. Indeed, change has come.
