Mayor Inday laments politicizing of mall fire

MAYOR Sara Duterte has lamented the politicizing of the NCCC Mall fire tragedy.

“This is one of those opportunities that critics find fault,” Duterte said in vernacular.

The mayor denied having hands in the investigation in the incident as critics assailed her alleged impartiality being an endorser of the company that owns the ill-fated mall.

“My impartiality has been questioned and there have been suggestions that I should inhibit myself from the investigation of the NCCC mall fire because of an endorsement contract,” Duterte said in a statement sent to reporters.

“For the record, I am not part of the investigation team. I have never presented myself to investigate the mall fire and under normal circumstances, a City Mayor does not sign fire investigation reports of the BFP,” she said.

The mayor has admitted to have a commitment with Choice Mart, a brand of NCCC supermarket.

Duterte said she is willing to face any investigation in the case.

“Nobody can question how I did my work as mayor in helping the family of the victims, the BFP, the NCCC, and SSI officials,” the mayor added.

Duterte further said: “The way my staff and CSSDO (City Social Services Development Office) handled everything during the evening of Dec 23 until today prevented chaos and hysteria among the victims and Dabawenyos in general.”

After her first three-year term as mayor ended in 2013, Duterte spent time as a celebrity endorser.

In the three years as private citizen, she became the face of various brands such as Rexidol and NCCC’s Choice Mart as well as a TV show host in GMA’s regional TV station.

The NCCC Mall website, NCCC.com.ph confirms Duterte’s endorsement under Choice Mart in a press release dated Sept. 8, 2015.

“Infamous for her firm leadership style, Inday Sara embodies the characteristics of new generation moms,” the PR said.
