Mayor Duterte: LTRFB favorable to bus system

MAYOR Sara Duterte said she is getting a favorable nod from the Land Transportation and Franchise Regulatory Board (LTFRB) on her request to temporarily exclude the city from the planned jeepney modernization plan.

Speaking to reporters Monday, Duterte said the LTFRB assured her that the city’s High Priority Bus System (HPBS) proposal is well within the parameters of the national modernization plan for public vehicles.

In her talk with the LTFRB officials, Duterte said she asked the LTFRB to delay the jeepney modernization as the city is planning to implement the HPBS.

Under the proposed HPBS, all existing public jeepneys will be phased out as the city will introduce buses.

The national government is planning to implement the jeepney modernization plan by early next year, as new jeepneys will replace the old jeepneys.

But Mayor Duterte said it would be “very unfair” to jeepney operators in Davao to require them to comply with the jeepney modernization and that they would later be told to junk their new jeepney once the city’s HPBS would be implemented.

The HPBS is part of the proposal of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to the city after a study was conducted around five years ago.
