Matobato surrenders

SELF-CONFESSED Davao Death Squad hitman Edgar Matobato yesterday surrendered to the Manila Police District following the issuance of arrest order by a Davao judge in connection with the ambush of an agrarian reform officer.

Judge Silverio Castillo of Regional Trial Court Manila branch 48 later ordered the release of Matobato after he posted P200,000 bail.

Atty. Josue Jude Sabio, legal counsel of Matobato, in a phone interview said that his client surrendered to Manila City Hall at 1 p.m. and was brought to MPD headquarters.

Sabio added that Judge Castillo issued the release order by 4:30 p.m.

Judge Carmelita Sarno-Davino of Regional Trial Court Branch 19 in Digos City, Davao del Sur ordered the arrest of Matobato over a frustrated murder case filed by Abeto Salcedo Jr., a retired adjudicator of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR).

Salcedo identified Matobato as the one who shot him on Oct. 23, 2014 at the junction of Bonifacio Street and Bago in Digos.

Matobato was identified by Salcedo after seeing him on national TV testifying before a Senate hearing on the Davao Death Squad (DDS) on Sept. 15.

Matobato, in a Senate inquiry in October, claimed that President Rodrigo Duterte was behind a spate of killings in Davao City penetrated by the DDS during his stint as mayor.
