Math geniuses arrive in city in November for Olympiad

DAVAO CITY will be hosting the International Teenagers Mathematics Olympiad (ITMO) from Nov. 8 to 12.

Organizers claimed that one of the draws of the city is its being the hometown of President Rodrigo Duterte.

The event aims to gather around 600 math wizards from all over the world, organizers from the Mathematics Trainers Guild of the Philippines (MTG) said in a press conference at the Grand Regal Hotel.

The events are scheduled in November both at the Grand Regal Hotel and the Waterfront Insular Hotel, with the Department of Education (DepEd) and Department of Science and Technology (DOST) providing its support for the project.

“We are very delighted that the 2017 International Teenagers Mathematics Olympiad will be held in President Duterte’s hometown,” said Dr. Isidro Aguilar MTG president.

The guests will be toured around the city and showcased its cultural heritage.

Aguilar expressed gratitude to the Davao City government and its people for their support to the contest.

The contest will feature participants from Grades 5 and 6, as well as high school students enrolled in Senior High School.

Each team consists of a team leader, a deputy team leader, and four contestants, with the event consisting of individual and team competitions, a group contest, and a puzzle challenge competition.

The group prizes will be awarded based on the scores of the top three members of each team in the individual contest. The team prizes will be given Io the top three teams of each group,

Davao City, as the host, will be granted two teams in the competition, while the Philippines will be granted four other slots from other areas in the country as the host country, per contest rules.
