Main suspect in killing of village councilor arrested

THE SUSPECT in the murder of a barangay councilor in Maco, Compostela Valley on Tuesday was arrested by the police in the Davao Medical Center in Apokon, Tagum city.

Chief Insp Milgrace Driz, spokesperson of Police Regional Office (PRO) XI, identified the suspect as Bryan Peñaranda Genon, 36, a resident of Makambol, Dawan, Mati City.

Driz said the suspect was positively identified by the responding team, down to the gunshot wound on the leg, who engaged two suspects in a firefight moments after the killing of Omar Escobar Macusang.

Genon remained under guard in the same hospital while he’s recuperating.

Macusang, the newly elected barangay councilor of Pangi, Maco, was gunned down on Tuesday around 12:40 p.m. at the bridge of Purok Tagumpay, Barangay Binuangan, Maco.  The victim was on board a black Ford Ranger pick-up when shot by a rider of a Yamaha XTC motorcycle without plate.

The victim was rushed to Davao Regional Medical Center in Tagum City by was dead on arrival.

Meanwhile, responding police engaged the gunmen in a firefight and one of them was hit on the leg but was able to escape.
