Lupian bags 1st ASEAN Grand Master title

NATIONAL Master Alexander ‘the Legend’ Lupian added another accolade to his collection of titles after recently being awarded the 1st ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Grand Master title following their team’s victory in the recently held 17th ASEAN Age Group Open Chess Championships at the Dusit Thani Hotel from May 29-June 7 in Pattaya, Thailand.

During the weekly SCOOP (Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines) session at the Royal Mandaya Hotel last Tuesday, Lupian, who was accompanied by fellow senior wood pusher Engr. Allan Diez, gave a brief but very colorful rundown of his storied life in Philippine Chess.

Lupian, was a member of the UAAP (Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines) University of Mindanao Champion team in the 1980s and became a member of the Olympic Philippine Chess team in 1982.

He has been a regular competitor for the city in the local, national and international tournaments and is now part of the seniors team of the country which include GM Jayson Gonzales, Diez and perennial 50-year-old-and-above winner Edmundo Gatos from Tondo, Manila who recruited them to be a part of the squad that played recently in Thailand.

‘Vietnam garnered 74 golds and won the overall while we were in 2nd with 22 golds. Alex won in the standard event which earned him the title. There was also the Rapid and Blitz events where we also joined,’ Diez, a local businessman based in Davao said.

The duo’s next target following this competition will be its next installment in 2017 set in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia and the Bangkok Open Chess in April next year.

‘Our stint in Pattaya was funded from our own pockets, but at least we still came home with medals and something for our countrymen to cheer about,’ Diez said in closing. SCOOP-Davao
