Line of sight: Travel wherever, whenever

People change over time – physically, emotionally and mentally.  Our perspectives, desires, and choices in life also change as we grow old.  Moreover, the way we look at and value money change as time passes by.  In the past, people are more focused on working hard and saving money to purchase material things and prepare for the inevitable.

Nowadays, people, particularly millennials, choose traveling over saving because of their will and desire to gain more experiences and memories that only actual travel can give. Thanks to the internet and our ever-changing technology, it is now possible to create our own travel schedule at a big discount.  However, what really drives people to invest more on moments rather than material things? We give you why:
1.    Need for self-actualization
According to the famous Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the highest level is self-actualization or self-fulfillment. People have that inner desire for personal growth and the need to realize some, if not all, of their infinite possibilities. What better way can a person achieve all these than to get out of their comfort zone and travel the unfamiliar world? Traveling gives the person the opportunity to become a better person by encountering diverse traditions and customs, embracing new cultures, exploring never-before-seen places and interacting with new people.  As the millennials love to say, YOLO or You only live once; hence, make the most out of it.
2.    Physical and mental exhaustion
Most people, especially the working class and young professionals, feel they are left out of the loop due to the unending demands of their bosses and clients. To them, traveling serves as a way to relax and escape from their busy schedules so they can empty their minds and refresh their whole being.  In this day and age, work is always constant; however, one’s youth and health can no longer be restored once it fades and deteriorates so enjoy what lasts.
3.    Influence of social media

Social media websites were created to connect with countless people around the globe and to share information and tips with them. Social media also enable people to share images and videos of recent activities and happenings. These captured moments showing breathtaking places, mouth-watering food and fun adventure have become most people’s goal for travelling. Travel goals motivate and inspire people to experience wonderful things the world has to offer.  It also gives people the satisfaction of achieving one’s goal and having the right to actually say “been there, done that” every time a picture of a familiar place or event comes up from others’ travels.

4.    Affordable means of transportation

As new modes of transportation emerge from time to time, competition in this industry cannot be avoided.  Many transportation companies, particularly airline companies, are offering cheap and affordable flights going to tourist destinations in order to increase sales and gain loyal customers. Consequently, more people are enticed to travel without having to worry about what’s left of their money upon returning home.  A significant portion of a person’s travel fund can now be allocated to “pocket money”, which means more value for food, adventure, and souvenirs.
Aside from those mentioned above, there are still lots of reason why people travel. Traveling does not only foster excitement and thrill, it also fuels a person’s enthusiasm to learn and discover more of himself and to enjoy life as much as possible.  True enough, traveling reveals a striking reality within ourselves and that is to realize and appreciate the value of not only having a life but actually experiencing what it is to have one. As the famous saying goes, “We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.”
