Karlo only supports Duterte for president

DAVAO City First District Rep. Karlo B. Nograles said no other name has appeared in his radar after Mayor Rodrigo Duterte announced his decision not to run in the 2016 presidential elections.

Speaking in his TV program “Kalamboan Dala Tanan” that continues to air this week, Nograles said no presidential aspirant has come close to Duterte’s vision for a better Mindanao.

Nograles said like many supporters of the mayor, he is still hoping that Duterte will make a last-minute change of heart. The Congressman said he was together in spirit with the people who showed up in Luneta on Sept. 26 to convince Duterte to reconsider and run for president next year.

The filing of certificates of candidacies for the May 9, 2016 elections will be on Oct. 12 to 16.

“There are still many days remaining for the mayor to change his mind,” Nograles said at the sidelines of a barangay event, Saturday.

For his own political plan, Nograles said that he is set to run for his third and final term as congressman representing District 1. He denied persistent talks that he is eyeing a local position, noting that the mayoralty was already offered to former mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio while the vice mayoralty is expected to be taken by the incumbent, Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte.

Asked about the slide in the survey ratings of Duterte, Nograles said it was somehow expected because the mayor has repeatedly stated that he will be out of the presidential race. Nograles said to Duterte’s credit, he was able to keep a solid 15% following based on Pulse Asia’s Aug. 27-Sept 3 survey.

“Take note that based on the same survey, as much as 20% of the voters remain virtually undecided on the presidency,” Nograles observed. “Mayor Duterte could attract these votes and come out the big winner if he would decide to run and present his platform to the nation.”

Nograles said those who are floating the possibility of Duterte running for vice president or senator should abandon the idea.

“Mayor Duterte is an effective executive,” he explained. “Mayor Duterte himself said he is best suited for the executive branch.”

Nograles said that only Duterte has the best platform of government for Mindanao, making it difficult for him to choose another presidential candidate. “No one among them espouses federalism and no one among them knows how to really solve Mindanao’s problems. It is only Mayor Rody,” he said.
