Jimmy: Mayor to lead trade mission to Japan

Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio will head to Tokyo, Japan next month rto assure a delegation from the neighboring Asian country that Davao City is a safe place to invest.

Duterte-Carpio, which will lead the trade mission for the first time, will also be joined by other city government officials and leaders of the business sector, said Councilor Jimmy Dureza, head of the city council committee on trade and industry.

Dureza said the delegation will travel to four cities in Japan from Oct. 16 to 20, with funding for the official travel to come from the budget of the Davao City Investment Promotions Center.

The trade mission will be an opportunity for the city to reach out to Japanese investors, Dureza said, and introduce them to agricultural products such as the city’s high value crops.

Dureza said that the trip also aims to replicate the gains of a previous business matching activity held in Singapore two years ago.

The expedition aims to provide business support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the city by matching the investors in the Japanese cities to the products and human resources from the city.

Dureza was a guest at Tuesday’s Pulong Pulong ni Pulong weekly forum at the Councilors’ Lounge at the City Council.

“We will be bringing members of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) and other businessmen,” Dureza said as the mission is a tourism and economic roadshow.

He said that the city was taking advantage of the capability of the SME Council, a body that was created as an executive order under Duterte-Carpio’s previous term as mayor.

The council is chaired by the mayor, with the regional director of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) as the vice chair.

The members of the SME Council include representatives of the city council committee on trade, the DCCCII, as well as members of the academe and other representatives from the business sector.
